But HBOT contains 100% oxygen which stimulates the growth of body cells, tissues and new blood vessels; reduces pain and stress; improves energy and blood circulation; decreases swelling and inflammation, deactivates and clears toxins and metabolic waste; as well as improves the healing rate and ability to fight infection.
The concept of hyperbaric oxygenation dated back to 1662 and has gained recognition in conventional medicine in the past 40 years. The air we normally breathe at sea level contains 21% oxygen, 78 nitrogen and 1% other gases. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is where a patient breathes 100% oxygen inside a chamber at a pressure higher than the pressure at sea level. This non-invasive treatment has been described by Health Canada as a well-established medical treatment for certain conditions. At an elevated pressure, the administration of 100% pure oxygen through HBOT increases the oxygen delivered to the body by 10 - 15 times. Thus, it improves blood circulation, stimulates oxygenation, accelerates wound healing, boosts immunity to fight chronic infections, treats injuries, reduces pain and inflammation, increases stem cell proliferation, speeds up new blood vessel formation and restores normal bodily functions.
HBOT stimulates oxygenation in the body, strengthens circulation and blood flow and boosts up the immune system . Anyone who wishes to improve the overall health or suffers from any of the listed conditions will benefit from HBOT.
International Hyperbaric Health Center in Richmond BC is equipped with three ASME/PVHO certified HARD-SHELLED multi-place chambers with operating permits. The large multi-place chamber accommodates 6 people and is quite similar to the one at Vancouver General Hospital. For safety reasons, we DO NOT use soft chambers that Health Canada does not approve. The Center has a team of professionals and certified technicians who are committed to serving clients with attention and care. We provide free consultations and price our treatments at the most reasonable level so more people can enjoy the benefits of HBOT. Our many success stories are our track record.
When undergoing a treatment session in a multi-place chamber, the client wears a transparent hood delivering 100% oxygen. There are 2 technicians manning the chamber controls from the outside when operating the chamber; and an attendant accompanying the client inside the chamber.
Some clients prefer the multi-place chambers which have vastly more space inside where they can stand and stretch; this gives a much less claustrophobic feeling compared to a mono chamber. There is an extra degree of safety with a multi-place chamber in contrast to a mono- chamber. In a mono-chamber, the entire environment is flooded with 100% oxygen, and in the inadvertent chance a client brings in a flammable object, the result is more likely to be catastrophic. In a multi-place chamber, the client wears a transparent hood meaning the only area with 100% oxygen is contained around the client’s head, thus, a safer environment.
IHHC is conveniently located in the Ironwood area in Southeast Richmond BC, easily accessible from the Lower Mainland as well as other parts of Canada & the USA via Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

At the beginning of each treatment, the client will feel the change in pressure in the ears (similar to the feeling while one is in an airplane). To equalize the pressure in the ears, the attendant will provide instructions. It is only necessary to do this during the first few minutes of the treatment. During the treatment, the client may sleep, read books/magazines, or just relax. Patients of all ages generally tolerate the treatments very well.
Near the end of your HBOT treatment, our technician will gradually decrease the chamber pressure. This is the decompression phase, which usually lasts for about 15 minutes. During decompression, patients will experience a “popping” sensation in their ears as a result of the decreasing pressure. This may be similar to what is felt in an airplane.
After a hyperbaric oxygen treatment, some clients may notice sensations of tiredness or hunger.
Safety precautions are taken to ensure your safety at all times while inside the hyperbaric chamber. 100 % cotton clothing and footwear must be worn during the treatment.
For safety reasons, please do not wear
Lipstick, make-up, nail polish
Vaseline based products
Oil based products
Hair spray
Colognes and perfumes
Remove any unnecessary prosthetic devices
Wigs, watches, jewellery, contact lenses, and hearing aids.
The following are PROHIBITED from entering the hyperbaric chamber:
Electronic devices, car key remotes
Batteries
Watches
Hearing Ads
Ball pens (pencil is fine)
Cigarettes, matches, lighters and smoking materials
Newsprint (Reading material such as books or magazines are allowed)
Foods, candies, or juice
Smoking constricts the blood vessels, we ask you to refrain from smoking while taking the treatments, refrain from caffeine and carbonated drinks for 12 hours prior to each treatment.
Some medications are not compatible with hyperbaric oxygen therapy such as Adriamycin, Bleomycin, and Sulfamylon. We will need to know all medications you are currently taking. Chemotherapy agents, seizure medications, steroids, and diabetic medications are of particular importance. Please be sure to inform us of all such medications that you are taking now and have them clearly indicated on your medical history form.
Please DO NOT hesitate to talk to our technicians or attendants if you have any concern. If you wish to take anything into the chamber with you, ALWAYS check with our staff prior to entering the chamber.
It is not advisable for clients to receive HBOT under the following conditions:
No, hyperbaric oxygen treatment is not painful. You may feel pressure in your ears similar to the sensation during takeoff and landing on an airplane. Clearing your ears by yawning or swallowing can help alleviate this discomfort.
Yes, when administered by trained professionals, HBOT is generally considered safe; however, it's important to inform your medical doctor or our attendant about any medical conditions, medications, or concerns you have before undergoing treatment. Side effects are rare and may include ear discomfort, sinus congestion, or temporary changes in vision.
HBOT is used to treat a range of medical conditions, including non-healing wounds, diabetic ulcers, carbon monoxide poisoning, radiation injuries, decompression sickness ("the bends"), and certain types of infections. It's often part of a comprehensive treatment plan. See our "Conditions" page for a more comprehensive list and details of medical conditions that hyperbaric oxygen treatments are effective in treating.
Yes, in many cases, HBOT can be used in conjunction with other medical treatments. It's important to communicate with your medical doctor about all the treatments you are undergoing to ensure they work together safely and effectively.
The timeline for results varies depending on the condition being treated and the individual factors. You may experience improvements after the first session, after just a few sessions, or you might require more time. Your attendant will monitor your progress and adjust the treatment plan if needed.
No, the high oxygen environment in the chamber can be a fire hazard, so the use of electronic devices that generate sparks or heat is prohibited. It's essential to follow the safety guidelines provided by the treatment facility. We suggest conversing with others in the chamber or bringing along a book or magazine.
Normobaric oxygen treatments involve administering oxygen at normal atmospheric pressure. This is in contrast to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which involves delivering oxygen at pressures higher than normal atmospheric pressure. The choice between normobaric and hyperbaric oxygen therapy depends on the specific medical condition and the desired therapeutic outcome.
A Professional Tennis Player, used HBOT for recovery after an exhausting set.
An Olympic Swimmer, who won 16 Olympic medals benefitted from HBOT while training.
A Professional Golfer who had been using HBOT to shorten the recovery time from numerous injuries he sustained over the years.
A Professional Basketball Player for the LA Lakers, suffered a nasty high ankle sprain in 2021 in a match with the Atlanta Hawks. HBOT accelerated the healing process.
There is a saying, “health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship”. At International Hyperbaric Health Centers Inc., our mission is to help our clients improve their quality of life and get their health back on track through the power of oxygen. IHHC operates under the direction of a knowledgeable team. One of our directors has over 20 years of experience in HBOT.
